More Wolf Among Us (And Other Great Telltale Chapters)

Wednesday, July 19, 2017

Telltale just dropped some news worth squeeing over, Season 2 of Wolf Among Us will be released in 2018!

7 Days to Die, Hours of Entertainment

Sunday, May 21, 2017

Every now and then, I buy a game on a whim. Often I come to regret this purchase, but just as often I stumble across a gem that otherwise would have flown completely under my radar. Such was the case with 7 Days to Die. Wandering through GameStop, I saw 7 Days to Die sitting on the PS4 shelf with a limited time sale sticker on it. I actually thought that 7 Days to Die was a completely different game when I picked it up, but as I read the back of the case I decided it might be worth checking out.

The Walking Dead Season 3: A New Frontier

Tuesday, January 17, 2017
Pre-apocalypse Javier. Looks like a young guy with a whole lot ahead of him.

I've been following Telltale since their early days with Sam and Max and Monkey Island (both new additions to two of my favorite Lucasarts adventure series) but I don't think many will argue that their work on The Walking Dead really put them on the map. The story they told proved that they were capable of far more than just comedy. The story of Lee and Clementine remains one of my favorites from the last 10 years. Though it ended tragically for Lee (I draw the spoilers line at 3+ years. Sorry, folks.), we've still had Clementine around. She was the player character for Season 2 and is back in Season 3 as a very important NPC. Seeing the way that she has grown and changed over the course of the story has brought hope and heartache and Season 3's 2 episode debut shows no signs of changing that.

Batman the Telltale Series Episode 2: Children of Arkham

Tuesday, October 11, 2016

When I wrote me review of the first episode of Telltale's Batman series, I talked about the difficulty of writing stories for so many well known characters. There is so much well established history to the Batman mythos and it is taken so seriously by some, that trying to bring a fresh eye to anything considered canon is a risky move. Movies, shows, animated features, games and even a few comics have aimed to accomplish something like this and failed, sometimes so spectacularly that it becomes a joke for years to come. I was worried that Telltale, in trying to bring so many disparate origin stories together in one series would miss something vital or go too far out on a limb in the name of innovation. After playing the second episode, my fears have lessened substantially.

Batman: A Telltale Game Series, Episode one: Realm of Shadows Review

Tuesday, August 2, 2016

Batman in the hands of Hollywood has always been more about action than anything else. In any of the films or games, Batman has been a warrior, Bringing justice to super criminals through judicious application of fisticuffs. When I read the comics as a kid though, it wasn't this side of the Dark Knight that stood out to me. Instead, I've always remembered Batman as the world's greatest detective. That persona has been sorely lacking in almost every portrayal of the character outside of the comics (and even those have strayed more than a little from time to time). My hope with the Telltale series was to finally see that part of Batman realized.

Tales From the Borderlands Review: The Best of Both Worlds

Tuesday, October 20, 2015

Teamwork, trust, ambition; three words that sum up the Borderlands series. Omnipresent, even in their antithetical forms, these facets have been at the root of the franchise since the beginning. Where Borderlands 2 deepened the narrative of the franchise, Tales From the Borderlands increases it exponentially. Told through the lens of Telltale's characteristic methodology, Tales shows through as the best story to come out of the series' tumultuous universe.

Minecraft Story Mode, Episode 1

Tuesday, October 13, 2015

Minecraft: Story Mode Episode 1- The Order of Stone
is a witty, fulfilling game that sets up what I hope to be a very entertaining series. Set in the universe of Minecraft (ahem, hence the name), Telltale's latest series is a more accessible game, aimed at the entire family rather than the strictly adult setting that Walking Dead, Wolf Among Us or Tales From The Borderlands. This is the first Telltale game since 2011's Back to the Future to hold less than a Mature rating from the ESRB but the seasoned developer hasn't lost any of its skill in the change of pace.

Tales From The Borderlands: Catch a Ride

Thursday, June 25, 2015

I am so thankful for Telltale Game's Tales From the Borderlands series. With the dark tones of The Walking Dead Season 2, Wolf Among Us and Game of Thrones, I was in desperate need of something lighter. The three episodes available now are some of the wittiest material Telltale has written in recent years. Main characters Rhys and Fiona show more depth with each episode.

Spoilers are nearly unavoidable at this point. We've been struggling with how we write our Telltale articles for a while now. I've done my best to conceal major plot points, but there are some details covered in this article you may want to avoid if you want a pristine experience.

Tales From The Borderlands Episode 2: Atlas Mugged

Tuesday, March 17, 2015

Look, it's really difficult to write episode reviews without giving away too much of the story. I'll do my best to be vague here, but it's up to you all to play the game. Telltale has seldom let me down, and the second episode of Tales From the Borderlands really delivers. Everything that I thought might have been missing from the first episode has been filled out really well this time around.

Tales of Ice & Fire - "The Lost Lords"

Tuesday, February 10, 2015

Time again to delve into Telltale's  Game of Thrones Series. Episode 2, "The Lost Lords", dropped on February 3rd and frankly, I have been hesitant to see what my choices have wrought. This game (thus far) has brought out the neurotic in me.

Tales of Ice & Fire - "Iron from Ice"

Thursday, December 18, 2014

The pairing of Telltale Games and Game of Thrones is a match made in heaven (or hell depending on your interpretation). Author of the book series, George R.R. Martin, has established time and time again that he has no fear of making hard choices in his Song of Ice & Fire books and "killing his darlings" has become something of a signature. Telltale Games, the well known publisher of The Walking Dead series is likewise known for its interactive choices and not being shy about death(s) as a result. I honestly couldn't think of a more appropriate studio to take a successful whack at portraying Westeros intrigue in a video game medium.

Tales From The Borderlands: Stomping Grounds

Thursday, November 27, 2014

Tales From The Borderlands
. What happens when you take the established and chaotic world of Pandora and switch the focus away from vault hunters and a bajillion guns? Could it still maintain the same feel or would it be impossible to maintain? Would a story based more around choice and consequence still be recognizable as a Borderlands game?

The short answer is yes. The first episode, "Zer0 Sum" is very much a Borderlands game. From the moment it begins, there is no question what universe you inhabit. Every inch of Pandora looks and feels as it should, from the guns to the psychos. The wit and bloody humor the fills every corner of Borderlands is there as well. Tales feels like a new path through a familiar place. It's familiar enough to be comfortable (or as comfortable as you can be on a planet filled with murderous raiders) but the change of perspective keeps things from feeling tired.

Telltale Reveals Game of Thrones Trailer and Details

Thursday, November 20, 2014

We've known for some time that Telltale was working with HBO to create an episodic game based on the show Game of Thrones, based on A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin. All  we knew for certain was that it would be an adventure game much like Telltale's critically acclaimed The Walking Dead series. Game of Thrones themed games have universally been poor (save one, but it's an unlicensed mod) I have been carefully poised astride worry and excitement for months now, but with the first trailer and early details now available I'm ready to commit to excitement.

Amid The Ruins: The Walking Dead, Season 2

Tuesday, July 29, 2014

It just doesn't get any easier. The Walking Dead has always tugged at my heart. The first season made it clear that choices are not always easy, and the right thing to do might end up getting someone killed. So it is. Season two's Clementine continues to become a more responsible and capable member of the group, but choices are still hard, and people still die.

The Wolf Among Us, Episode 5: Cry Wolf

Tuesday, July 22, 2014

A good Crime Noir story keeps you guessing. What starts as a murder eventually goes deeper and deeper until it's revealed an enormous crime ring. Accusations fly from one suspect to the next and the reader is left to try and make sense of it all until the very end. That is the journey The Wolf Among Us has taken players on over the last nine months. Bigby Wolf, Fabletown Sheriff brings the first (and hopefully not the last) season of Telltales trip into Bill Willinghams universe to a close as only he could.

The Wolf Among Us; Episode 4 "In Sheep's Clothing"

Tuesday, May 27, 2014

"It's the job," is one of the first things Bigby gets an opportunity to say in the latest episode of The Wolf Among Us. "In Sheep's Clothing" is the fourth and penultimate installment of the acclaimed Telltale series base on Bill Willingham's Fables comic. It's an episode dedicated almost entirely to clearing up loose ends, but in doing so, sets up a finale that could really go anywhere. This far into the story, spoilers are increasingly difficult to avoid. I'll do my best to avoid major points, but if you haven't gotten the hint by now, go and buy The Wolf Among Us.

No One's Little Girl; The Walking Dead 'In Harm's Way'

Tuesday, May 20, 2014

The Walking Dead has had a strong second season so far. Clementine has shown a great deal of growth since the first episode, but tragedy seems to follow her wherever she goes. The first two episodes in this season of Telltale's acclaimed series have put Clementine through some truly terrifying situations. While certainly put through her paces physically, the previous episodes focused more on mental and emotional hardships. The third episode takes all that's been pent up and dishes out one of the more action focused episodes so far in the series.

[WARNING: Some Spoilers ahead.]

Walking the Crooked Mile: The Wolf Among Us Episode 3 Review

Thursday, April 10, 2014

Bigby's got a rough job. As the Sheriff of Fabletown and one of the more fearsome fables around, you'd think he'd get a little more respect. You'd be sorely wrong. Telltale's third episode of The Wolf Among Us, A Crooked Mile makes that fact abundantly clear. Try as you might, through option after option, there's no silver lining to this episode. It's gritty, tough and bloody.

Walking Dead Season 2, Episode 2: Try to Make the Best of a Bad Situation

Tuesday, March 11, 2014

Clementine. An eleven year old girl, awash in a zombie apocalypse. The first episode of The Walking Dead's second season was largely spent convincing the player that she doesn't need the kind of protection we fought so hard to give her in the first season. She's tougher than she was when we left her, she's resourceful and brave. The closing scenes of the previous episode made that all very clear. Uncomfortably so. With the player thus convinced, Episode 2, 'A House Divided' is free to deal more with Clem's attitude towards her new found group.

Smoke and Mirrors; The Wolf Among Us Episode 2

Tuesday, February 4, 2014

Four months ago, Telltale released the first episode of The Wolf Among Us, the adventure game series based on Bill Willingham's incredible Fables comics. Today, the second episode, Smoke and Mirrors was released for PC and consoles. Smoke and Mirrors is a brilliant second act, full of new characters (many familiar to Fables fans), and a compelling noir mystery delivered with all the polish and  skill we've come to expect from a Telltale game.
